About opentools.dev

opentools.dev helps you find open-source software you can run yourself, and the free alternatives to products you pay for. Search for a product you use, like Notion or Dropbox, and you get the apps that replace it, with their license, how popular they are and how active their development is.

Where the data comes from

The list of apps comes from awesome-selfhosted, a list maintained by its community and published under CC BY-SA 3.0. GitHub stars, releases and commit activity come from GitHub. We refresh the data regularly. The apps' own descriptions are translated into German, French and Spanish.

Which open-source apps replace which paid product is our own work. So are the guides: they are written and checked against each project's documentation, and they say when a license is not an approved open-source license.

How lists are ranked

On an alternatives page, the first app is the one that replaces the product best in our view: features first, then whether it is maintained, then popularity. Category pages sort by GitHub stars by default. Nobody can pay for a better position.

The site is free to use and paid for by ads on articles and comparison pages, and by sponsored links to a hosting service, which are marked as sponsored.

Something wrong or missing?

Write to hallo@blitzworks.io. If an app is missing, the quickest way in is to add it to awesome-selfhosted.
